The Evolution of the Airline Industry $22.23 Since the enactment of the Airline Deregulation Act in 1978, questions that had been at the heart of the ongoing debate about the industry for eighty years gained a new intensity: Is there enough competition among airlines to ensure that passengers do not pay excessive fares? Can an unregulated airline industry be profitable? Is air travel safe? While economic regulation provided a certain stability for both passengers and the industry, deregulation changed everything. A new fare structure emerged; travelers faced a variety of fares and travel restrictions; and the offerings changed frequently. In the last fifteen years, the airline industry’s earnings have fluctuated wildly. New carriers entered the industry, but several declared bankruptcy, and Eastern, Pan Am, and Midway were liquidated. As financial pressures mounted, fears have arisen that air safety is being compromised by carriers who cut costs by skimping on maintenance and hiring inexperienced pilots. Deregulation itself became an issue with many critics calling for a return to some form of regulation. In this book, Steven A. Morrison and Clifford Winston assert that all too often public discussion of the issues of airline competition, profitability, and safety take place without a firm understanding of the facts. The policy recommendations that emerge frequently ignore the long-run evolution of the industry and its capacity to solve its own problems. This book provides a comprehensive profile of the industry as it has evolved, both before and since deregulation. The authors identify the problems the industry faces, assess their severity and their underlying causes, and indicate whether government policy can play an effectiverole in improving performance. They also develop a basis for understanding the industry’s evolution and how the industry will eventually adapt to the unregulated economic environment. Morrison and Winston maintain that although the airline industry has not reached long-run equilibrium, its evolution is proceeding in a positive direction–one that will preserve and possibly enhance the benefits of deregulation to travelers and carriers. They conclude that the federal government’s primary policy objective should be to expand the benefits from unregulated market forces to international travel. Brookings Review article also available |

Fare Evasion $82.85 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Fare evasion, as distinct from fare avoidance, is the act of travelling on public transport in disregard of the law and/or regulation, having deliberately not purchased the required ticket to travel (having had the chance to do so). It is a problem in many parts of the world, and revenue protection officers operate on many systems. Often ticket barriers, manned or automatic, are in place at stations etc, to ensure only those with valid tickets may access the transport. One method of fare evasion is jumping over the turnstiles which mark the entryway into a subway system; hence the euphemistic term, turnstile jumping. Improved Forecast Accuracy in Airline Revenue Management by Unconstraining Demand Estimates from Censored Data $21.37 Accurate forecasts are crucial to a revenue management system. Poor estimates of demand lead to inadequate inventory controls and sub-optimal revenue performance. Forecasting for airline revenue management systems is inherently difficult. Competitive actions, seasonal factors, the economic environment, and constant fare changes are a few of the hurdles that must be overcome. In addition, the fact that most of the historical demand data is censored further complicates the problem. This dissertation examines the challenge of forecasting for an airline revenue management system in the presence of censored demand data. This dissertation analyzed the improvement in forecast accuracy that results from estimating demand by unconstraining the censored data. Little research has been done on unconstraining censored data for revenue management systems. Airlines tend to either ignore the problem or use very simple ad hoc methods to deal with it. A literature review explores the current methods for unconstraining censored data. Also, practices borrowed from areas outside of revenue management are adapted to this application. For example, the Expectation-Maximization (EM) and other imputation methods were investigated. These methods are evaluated and tested using simulation and actual airline data. An extension to the EM algorithm that results in a 41% improvement in forecast accuracy is presented. |

Flugfelag Islands Douglas DC-4 “Gullfaxi” arriving at London Heathrow in June 1953 A pair of Icelandair Douglas DC-8s at Luxembourg – Findel Airport, Luxembourg. (1983) Icelandair traces its roots to 1937 when Flugfélag Akureyrar was founded in Akureyri on the north coast of Iceland. Operations started in 1938 with a Waco YKS-7 floatplane. In 1940, the company moved its headquarters to Reykjavík and changed its name to Flugfélag Íslands. A company called Loftleiðir had been formed by three pilots in 1944. Initially, Loftleiðir and Flugfélag Íslands concentrated on Icelandic domestic air services. In 1945, Flugfélag Íslands (Iceland Airways Ltd) made its first international flights to Scotland and Denmark. International services were commenced in 1946 with converted B-24 Liberator aircraft leased from Scottish Airways. Loftleiðir began scheduled international operations in 1947 and from 1948 used Douglas DC-4 Skymasters. Its pioneering low-fare services across the North-Atlantic commenced in 1953. At the time, IATA determined the fares for airlines flying between Europe and North America, and all airlines charged the same amount. Loftleiðir was not a part of IATA and could, therefore, determine its own fares, undercutting all competing airlines. This made them a popular hub for travel between Europe and North America. Flugfélag Íslands and Loftleiðir were merged in 1973 and the name |

For example, the Expectation-Maximization (EM) and other imputation methods were investigated. These methods are evaluated and tested using simulation and actual airline data. An extension to the EM algorithm that results in a 41% improvement in forecast accuracy is presented. |

Improved Forecast Accuracy in Airline Revenue Management by Unconstraining Demand Estimates from Censored Data $15.8 Used – Accurate forecasts are crucial to a revenue management system. This dis |

Strategic Bankruptcy $28.44 In 1982 Johns-Manville, a major asbestos manufacturer, declares itself insolvent to avoid paying claims resulting from exposure to its products. A year later, Continental Airlines, one of the top ten carriers in the United States, claims a deficit when the union resists plans to cut labor costs. Later still, oil powerhouse Texaco cries broke rather than pay damages resulting from a courtroom defeat by archrival Pennzoil. Bankruptcy, once a term that sent shudders up a manager’s spine, is now becoming a potent weapon in the corporate arsenal. In his timely and challenging study, Kevin Delaney explores this profound change in our legal landscape, where corporations with billions of dollars in assets use bankruptcy to achieve specific political and organizational objectives. As a consequence, bankruptcy court is rapidly becoming an arena in which crucial social issues are resolved: How and when will people dying of asbestos poisoning be compensated? Can companies unilaterally break legally negotiated labor contracts? What are the ethical and legal rules of the corporate takeover game? In probing the Chapter 11 bankruptcies of Johns-Manville, Frank Lorenzo’s Continental Airlines, and Texaco, Delaney shows that more and more, an array of powerful actors–corporations, commercial creditors, auditors, bond rating agencies and investment bankers–are coming to view bankruptcy as a legitimate business strategy. In each situation, the choice of bankruptcy by these corporate giants was directly influenced by the surrounding business community. In the case of Johns-Manville, carrying appropriate insurance did not prevent its twenty insurance companies from refusing to pay claims. Thanks to shrewdplanning and cooperation from Continental’s creditors, not only was the airline able to continue flying in the first week of Chapter 11, but it could also offer the lowest cross-country fare in the market. Texaco’s banks nudged their client toward bankruptcy as a way to squeeze it into |
